Africa: Then and Now

Maasai Tribe - Cattle, Culture, and Clothing
In the summer of 2019, my family and I went to Tanzania and Kenya for a safari trip. During the trip, we encountered many Maasai tribes and learned about their culture. This picture was taken at "elephant pepper camp" in Kenya and the majority of its workers there are Maasai people.
The Maasai people are a Nilotic ethnic group inhabiting northern, central and southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. They are best known for their distinct customs and clothing culture. The Maasai people’s traditional way of life is centered on cattle and they have depended on the cattle for food, religion, and clothing. The Maasai Shuka has become their trademark and they wear it with utmost pride and elegance. Dominated by the color red, other primary colors used in different prints of the Shuka represent different aspects – or elements – of the Maasai culture.(1) Maasai men, also known as the morans, performed a traditional dance called The Adumu, and it has been one of the most traditional dances of Maasai History.
